Expired Food Seized at Apollo Hospital Canteen During Bengaluru Food Raid

Expired and misbranded food was seized from an Apollo Hospital canteen on Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Road, where inspectors also flagged hygiene concerns, raising questions over food safety for recovering patients.

Inspectors seized expired and misbranded food items from the Apollo Hospital canteen on Bannerghatta Road during a raid on August 13, raising concerns over food safety and hygiene at a facility serving recovering patients.

Among the items seized was pani poori labeled as having been prepared on July 23 but carrying a best-before date of July 10. Inspectors also found dal and peas during the inspection.

The raid further identified hygiene concerns, including the use of plastic chopping boards in the hospital canteen.

The incident comes as Bengaluru continues a wider crackdown on food outlets and amid national debates over enforcement of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations. The issue has also drawn attention to the need for better labeling on unhealthy packaged foods, with the Supreme Court pressing for stronger labeling measures.

Nutritionist Shreya Shah noted the risks posed by such food safety lapses to recovering patients. The concerns have also drawn attention because the facility posted a profit of over ₹2,000 crore last year.

The seizure at the Bannerghatta Road hospital adds to scrutiny of food safety practices in Bengaluru, while the broader debate over FSSAI enforcement and food labeling continues at the national level.
